TODAY'S THE DAY!!!!!! (Day 1)

I am finally here!!! I first want to say to God be all the glory! I made it safely.

Things are calm for the most part. Lots of people have stared at our group but we were so busy with introductions that we barely noticed.

 ********************************************************************************
For those of you who don’t know, I’m Chrissy and I have wanted to visit India since I was a young girl. I realize that as a female of color and of plus sized shape from the USA, India is not the #1 place to visit. This blog is dedicated to share my experience as a colored woman in India with you. I will also include tips on Indian etiquette, things to beware of when traveling, and how to try and make the best of your Indian rupees esp. if you are used to being a diva on a dime. (This is my first blog so experienced bloggers go easy on me :P)

So here’s a little background. I was born in Washington DC and grew up in a predominantly Hispanic neighborhood in MD. After moving around a lot I ended up in a predominantly African American neighborhood. (Although it might be a tie between Latino/as and African Americans.) Other than growing up around those cultures, I have grown up and interacted with many Carribbean, South Asian African, and Caucasian people.

So I have finally gotten the chance to come to India through a Public Health program. I am very interested in learning about a health system other than the US health system and a major bonus is that I can study to become fluent in Hindi!!! Yay! So I guess without further a due, I will list things I was surprised or slightly shocked about.

  • I arrived at IGI airport and was surprised because I thought that it would be really crowded. I understand that there 1 billon + people here so I thought it would be crowded. I wasn’t complaining. I was actually happy that it wasn’t.

  • I knew this already but totally forgot that drivers drive on the right hand side and almost sat in the drivers seat for ur van.

  • I was very happy that the hotel and my host family will have regular toilets as opposed to what I call “pop a squat” toilets.

  • I was surprised I hadn’t seen any cows on my way to the hotel. Bummer -_-

  • The staff at my program is so nice and friendly. I didn’t expect them to be mean but didn’t know what to expect.

  • I was surprised at how no one paid attention the two lanes on the road, things are pretty much get by as long as you can.

Yeah I know I am so surprised about everything. But I can’t wait until tomorrow.
I am staying a few days in the Karina Hotel in Jasola Vihar. It’s a pretty nice hotel. The staff at the hotel seem somewhat nice.

I have included a few pics of my room at the end of this post.
